Cheapest paid site we can price on this page: ATCO - ATCO Park at $0.50/hr — about $2.43 per 100 km, the same as buying petrol at 27¢/L.

Calgary drivers who have gone electric face a different problem from the one this site was built for. There is no daily price to chase — electricity is billed per kilowatt-hour by a handful of networks, and the rate barely moves from week to week. What actually matters is location and speed: whether there is a charger where you are going, whether it will add meaningful range in the time you have, and whether you will be able to start a session without installing a new app in a parkade with no signal. This page maps every public charging site in the city so you can answer those questions before you leave.

The picture is lopsided in a way that surprises people coming from gasoline. The overwhelming majority of Calgary charging is Level 2 — 240-volt stalls that add roughly 30 to 50 kilometres of range per hour and are designed for the hours your car is parked anyway, at work, at a mall, in a condo parkade. DC fast charging, the kind that takes a battery from 20% to 80% while you drink a coffee, exists at only a small fraction of sites. If you are planning around a road trip or a same-day turnaround, the DC fast page is the one you want; if you are looking for somewhere to leave the car while you do something else, Level 2 coverage is genuinely good across the city.

One honest caveat about this data. It is compiled from OpenStreetMap and Open Charge Map, two open datasets maintained by contributors and by the networks themselves. That makes it broad and free of any single operator’s bias, but it also means individual records can be stale, a stall count can be wrong, and a site can be listed that is behind a gate or reserved for a building’s tenants. Treat this as a map for planning, and confirm live availability and pricing in the network’s own app before you rely on a specific charger.

What charging costs in Calgary

Charging rates are set per site and are not published in any single feed the way pump prices are. Where the open data records a rate we show it on the charger — that covers 77 of the 237 sites on this page. Converted to the distance you actually drive, public charging in Calgary works out like this:

How you chargeTypical ratePer 100 kmSame as petrol at
Free public charging44 sites, almost all Level 2No charge$0
Charging at home overnightTypical Calgary all-in residential rate, energy plus delivery~$0.20/kWh$3.6040¢/L
Public Level 2, billed by the hour19 sites recording a rate, from $0.50 to $2.50 per hour$2.00/hr$5.0056¢/L
DC fast, billed by the kilowatt-hour4 sites recording a rate, from $0.35 to $0.60 per kWh$0.45/kWh$8.1091¢/L
Filling up with regularCalgary average across 304 tracked stations181.6¢/L$16182¢/L

How these are worked out. A mid-size EV using 18 kWh per 100 km, compared against a gasoline car burning 8.9 L per 100 km. Hourly rates assume 7.2 kW — what most cars actually draw on a 240-volt stall, regardless of how the stall is rated. Per-minute rates assume a session averaging 80% of the site's rating and never more than 100 kW, well under a big cabinet's headline number because charging tapers as the battery fills and your car sets its own ceiling. Alberta winters cut real-world range, so expect to pay 20–40% more per kilometre between November and March. These are planning estimates, not quotes: confirm the live rate in the network's own app before you plug in. Pump prices come from our Calgary gas price tracker, updated four times a day.

EV Charging: FAQ

How many public EV chargers are there in Calgary?

We track the public charging sites listed in OpenStreetMap and Open Charge Map for Calgary and the immediately surrounding area, covering several hundred individual charging ports across roughly a dozen networks. The counts shown on this page are recalculated every time the directory is re-imported, so the figure in the summary above is current as of the date it states rather than a number typed in once.

What is the difference between Level 1, Level 2 and DC fast charging?

Level 1 is an ordinary 120-volt wall outlet and adds only about 5–8 km of range per hour — useful overnight, useless in a parking stop. Level 2 runs at 240 volts and typically adds 30–50 km per hour, which is what almost every workplace, mall and condo charger in Calgary provides. DC fast charging bypasses the car’s onboard charger entirely and delivers 50 kW or more directly to the battery, adding hundreds of kilometres per hour. Level 2 is for where you park; DC fast is for where you travel.

Which connector does my car use in Calgary?

For Level 2 charging, almost every non-Tesla EV sold in Canada uses the J1772 connector, and Teslas charge on it with the adapter that ships with the car. For DC fast charging the picture is split: most non-Tesla vehicles use CCS, older Nissan Leafs use CHAdeMO, and Teslas use NACS at Superchargers. Several manufacturers are moving to NACS, and some Calgary Supercharger sites now include a Magic Dock adapter that lets non-Tesla vehicles use them. Each charger card on this page lists the connectors reported for that site.

How much does it cost to charge an EV in Calgary?

There is no single published rate the way there is for gasoline — every site sets its own — but the open charger data does record a rate for a minority of Calgary sites, and those are shown on the charger cards above. The pattern they reveal is consistent: public Level 2 is usually billed by the hour at around $2, which works out near $5 per 100 km, and DC fast is billed by the kilowatt-hour at roughly $0.35 to $0.60, or about $6 to $11 per 100 km. Charging at home overnight costs roughly $3.60 per 100 km, and a handful of sites are genuinely free. The cost table above converts each of those into the cents-per-litre a gasoline driver would have to pay to match it.

Is charging an EV cheaper than buying gas in Calgary?

For most drivers who can charge at home, yes, and by a wide margin — home electricity is the cheapest way to fuel a vehicle in Alberta. Public DC fast charging narrows the gap considerably, and a driver who relies exclusively on public fast charging may not save much at all against an efficient gasoline car. We work through the full comparison, including winter range and the break-even on purchase price, in our electric vs gas cost breakdown.
