Cheapest paid site we can price on this page: SWTCH — 325 Shawville Boulevard SE at $2/hr — about $5.00 per 100 km, the same as buying petrol at 56¢/L.

SWTCH is a Canadian network built around a problem the other operators largely leave alone: charging for people who do not have a driveway. Its Calgary footprint is concentrated in condo and apartment parkades and workplace lots, where the hard part is not the charger itself but sharing limited electrical capacity among many stalls and billing each resident correctly. That focus makes SWTCH unusual and, for a large share of urban Calgary drivers, more relevant than the highway-oriented networks.

Every SWTCH site in Calgary is Level 2 — there are no DC fast units in its local footprint at all. That is a deliberate consequence of the market it serves. A car parked overnight in a residential parkade has ten or twelve hours available, so Level 2 is not merely adequate but genuinely the right tool, and it avoids the expensive electrical upgrades that DC fast charging in a residential building would demand.

Because so many SWTCH stalls sit inside private parkades, access is the thing to check before you plan around one. Some are open to visitors, many are restricted to residents or employees, and a listing appearing in open data does not guarantee you can drive up and use it. Where we have an access note from the source data it is shown on the card; where we do not, assume a residential site is restricted until you confirm otherwise.

What charging costs in Calgary

Charging rates are set per site and are not published in any single feed the way pump prices are. Where the open data records a rate we show it on the charger — that covers 7 of the 15 sites on this page. Converted to the distance you actually drive, public charging in Calgary works out like this:

How you chargeTypical ratePer 100 kmSame as petrol at
Free public charging4 sites, almost all Level 2No charge$0
Charging at home overnightTypical Calgary all-in residential rate, energy plus delivery~$0.20/kWh$3.6040¢/L
Public Level 2, billed by the hour2 sites, all at this rate$2.00/hr$5.0056¢/L
Filling up with regularCalgary average across 303 tracked stations181.6¢/L$16182¢/L

How these are worked out. A mid-size EV using 18 kWh per 100 km, compared against a gasoline car burning 8.9 L per 100 km. Hourly rates assume 7.2 kW — what most cars actually draw on a 240-volt stall, regardless of how the stall is rated. Per-minute rates assume a session averaging 80% of the site's rating and never more than 100 kW, well under a big cabinet's headline number because charging tapers as the battery fills and your car sets its own ceiling. Alberta winters cut real-world range, so expect to pay 20–40% more per kilometre between November and March. These are planning estimates, not quotes: confirm the live rate in the network's own app before you plug in. Pump prices come from our Calgary gas price tracker, updated four times a day.

SWTCH: FAQ

Can anyone use a SWTCH charger in Calgary?

Not always. SWTCH specialises in condo, apartment and workplace charging, and a large share of its Calgary sites sit inside private parkades restricted to residents, tenants or employees. Some locations are open to the public. Check the access note on the card and the SWTCH app before planning a stop.

Does SWTCH have any fast chargers in Calgary?

No. Every SWTCH site in Calgary that we track is Level 2. That fits the market it serves — cars parked overnight in residential buildings have plenty of time — but it means SWTCH is not the network to look at for a quick top-up. See the DC fast charging page for that.

How does SWTCH billing work in a condo building?

Sessions are started and paid through the SWTCH app, which lets a building bill individual residents for the energy they actually use rather than spreading charging costs across everyone’s condo fees. Buildings also use SWTCH load management to share limited electrical capacity across many stalls without an expensive service upgrade.

How do I get a charger installed in my Calgary condo?

That is a decision for the building’s board and property manager, not something an individual owner can usually arrange alone, since it involves the building’s shared electrical service. SWTCH and its competitors work directly with boards on load-managed installations. Alberta condo owners have some legal protections around installing charging, but the process still runs through the corporation.
