Cheapest paid site we can price on this page: JOLT Canada Charging Station — 2515 90 Avenue SW at $0.35/kWh — about $6.30 per 100 km, the same as buying petrol at 71¢/L.

DC fast charging is the small, important minority of Calgary’s charging infrastructure. These are the units that bypass your car’s onboard charger and push power straight into the battery, turning a charging stop into something closer to a fuel stop than a parking session. They are what makes an EV workable for a Banff day trip, a drive to Edmonton, or a day of back-to-back appointments across the city when you started at 30%.

Power output is the number that matters, and the spread across Calgary is enormous. The fastest site in the city runs at 350 kW, which on a vehicle that can accept it means adding a few hundred kilometres of range in the time it takes to buy a coffee. At the other end, plenty of sites labelled "fast" run at 50 kW, which is perfectly usable but roughly seven times slower. Your car sets its own ceiling too: a vehicle that maxes out at 100 kW gains nothing from a 350 kW cabinet beyond a shorter queue. This page ranks every DC site by its maximum reported output so you can find the genuinely quick ones.

Connector compatibility is the other thing to check before you drive. CCS is the standard for most non-Tesla vehicles sold in Canada, CHAdeMO survives mainly for older Nissan Leafs and is slowly disappearing, and NACS is Tesla’s connector — increasingly opened to other brands through Magic Dock hardware and adapters. A 350 kW cabinet is no use if it only offers a plug your car does not have, so every card below lists the connectors reported for that site.

What charging costs in Calgary

Charging rates are set per site and are not published in any single feed the way pump prices are. Where the open data records a rate we show it on the charger — that covers 7 of the 37 sites on this page. Converted to the distance you actually drive, public charging in Calgary works out like this:

How you chargeTypical ratePer 100 kmSame as petrol at
Charging at home overnightTypical Calgary all-in residential rate, energy plus delivery~$0.20/kWh$3.6040¢/L
DC fast, billed by the kilowatt-hour4 sites recording a rate, from $0.35 to $0.60 per kWh$0.45/kWh$8.1091¢/L
Filling up with regularCalgary average across 303 tracked stations181.6¢/L$16182¢/L

How these are worked out. A mid-size EV using 18 kWh per 100 km, compared against a gasoline car burning 8.9 L per 100 km. Hourly rates assume 7.2 kW — what most cars actually draw on a 240-volt stall, regardless of how the stall is rated. Per-minute rates assume a session averaging 80% of the site's rating and never more than 100 kW, well under a big cabinet's headline number because charging tapers as the battery fills and your car sets its own ceiling. Alberta winters cut real-world range, so expect to pay 20–40% more per kilometre between November and March. These are planning estimates, not quotes: confirm the live rate in the network's own app before you plug in. Pump prices come from our Calgary gas price tracker, updated four times a day.

DC Fast: FAQ

How long does DC fast charging take in Calgary?

On a 150 kW or faster charger, most modern EVs go from roughly 20% to 80% in 20 to 35 minutes. The last 20% is deliberately much slower — charging speed tapers sharply as the battery fills to protect it — which is why experienced drivers stop at 80% and move on rather than waiting for a full charge. On a 50 kW unit the same 20–80% top-up typically takes an hour or more.

Why is my car charging slower than the charger’s rating?

Three things usually explain it. Your vehicle has its own maximum DC acceptance rate and cannot draw more than that regardless of the cabinet. Charging speed tapers as the state of charge rises, so a battery above 60% will always be slower than one at 20%. And in a Calgary winter, a cold battery charges dramatically slower until it warms — preconditioning on the way to the charger, if your car supports it, makes a large difference.

Can a non-Tesla use a Tesla Supercharger in Calgary?

At some sites, yes. Tesla has been opening Superchargers to other brands through Magic Dock hardware and through vehicles that support the NACS connector natively. Availability varies site by site and changes over time, so check the Tesla app for which Calgary locations are currently open to non-Tesla vehicles before you rely on one.

Which is faster, CCS or CHAdeMO?

In practice CCS. CHAdeMO installations in North America are largely capped around 50 kW and the standard is being wound down as the vehicles that use it age out of the fleet. CCS installations routinely run at 150 kW and above. If your vehicle supports both, choose the CCS plug.
